KLCC Lot 171, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Tight construction program demands innovative formwork

Next to the iconic Petronas Towers, the latest addition to the skyline will re-shape Kuala Lumpur’s City Centre (KLCC). Stunning architecture, masterfully sculpted to shape the modern skyline of the bustling city, will offer shopping facilities, living space and office space.

Global Trend
Currently referred to as Lot '171', the 60 story multi-functioned tower has a curvilinear triangular form for the residential portion of the tower. At the base of the residential tower, the floor plan transforms into a rectangular shape to house offices and shops. The multi-functioned use of the building is in line with global trends and soon residents, shoppers and office workers will populate Lot 171.

Crane-less formwork erection
“We chose PERI Formwork for this project as it gives us the flexibility we need,” says Mr. Song, Construction Manager at Lot 171. “In addition, we needed to consider safety, environment and cost of ownership. PERI Formwork provides us with all these advantages.” According to Song, the time frame for the construction is relatively short, allowing only 140 weeks for the completion of the building.

Lot 171 is rising rapidly and steadily. A number of solutions are used for the construction of the sub-structure. For the slabs, PERI Multiflex Slab Formwork system is used. The GT24 and VT20 girders are supported by the PD8 frame and ST100 shoring systems, allowing floor heights of up to 6.5 meters. The advantage of using this combination is that it can be used for all floor heights as well as for all slab and beam thicknesses required. Furthermore, the system allows fast and easy erection without the necessity of a crane. This is important as the space around the construction site allows only for a limited number of cranes.

Safety & Training
In order to provide on going formwork training and support to the construction team, PERI Malaysia has commissioned experienced formwork supervisors to the project. The combined experience of the contractor and the formwork supervisors has enabled the construction team to establish a safe and productive working environment.

Versatility
Modular TRIO panel formwork is used for the Retaining Walls. Once assembled, the gang-formed panels are quickly moved into position with the aid of a mobile crane. Fewer components require less assembly time and easy adjustment for both, varying horizontal geometry as well as for varying vertical dimensions - thus enabling a quick and simple turnaround. Its durability also lowers the cost of ownership.

For the columns in Lot 171’s sub-structure, the contractor has selected VARIO Column formwork. Being able to pour the 5.2m columns in a single operation was a big plus. This resulted in fewer construction joints and a significant advantage in the overall construction process. The high pouring pressure of up to 80kN/m2, combined with the reduced number of tie points required, made VARIO Column formwork the obvious choice for this project.

Formwork Advantage
Various construction methods were evaluated, it was decided that the building’s cores would be constructed ahead of the slabs. In order to facilitate this requirement, the PERI CBC 240 crane climbing system was commissioned. . The CB 240 climbing bracket supports the GT24 VARIO formwork which is retracted on roller bearings. The 2.4m wide working platforms ensure a safe working environment for the workforce in order to clean the formwork and to fix reinforcement.

The design of the lift cores are challenging to construct as they begin as walls, but further up in the high-rise structure become columns and later on become lift cores again. “Working closely with PERI Malaysia from the beginning of the project, all technical issues could be addressed early in the construction process.” says Mr. Song This way the ideal formwork could be selected, thus providing the safest, most cost effective and practical solution available for this specific application. The time and cost saving features of PERI Formwork have already proven themselves; the project is currently ahead of schedule.
