Plantinum Park Phase 3

Naza & Tabung Haji Towers

The rotating towers of Platinum Park add a twist to the skyline of Kuala Lumpur, yet again challenging conventions. While the Felda Tower of Platinum Park is almost complete, IJM is now also using PERI formwork for Naza and Tabung Haji Towers of the project to take the design from concept to reality.

With the project start in January 2011, the project is well underway and should see the completion as scheduled in December 2013. As with many other projects in downtown Kuala Lumpur, IJM and PERI make the perfect team to tackle the design and construction challenges being thrown at the industry. Phase 3 of the project comprises of 2 towers that are linked via the car park to phase 1. Currently a wall separates the two, but will soon be removed to allow free flow of staff and residents within the complex. The substructure is completed and currently IJM is working on the car park levels. Since the surface area is rather large, each level takes about 3 weeks to complete.

“You could almost call them un-typical floors” explains Mr. Wong, project manager for the phase 3 of Platinum Park. The towers are rotating, a feature that PERI is very familiar with. Another reference project is the Absolute World Tower, which has similar features. Mr. Wong explains that “Each floor rotates between 3 to 8 degrees in relation to the floor underneath. As a result, the centre of gravity changes from floor to floor. Also, it means that the pressure distribution on each floor is different.” Here, more than in any other skyscraper, prestressed concrete is a needed to address the specific requirements of this building. While this is method solves the issue of stability, it also means that the casting times are not as quick. Through the use of PERI formwork this will be compensated however.

In addition to the twist in the building, the columns of the building are slanting as a result of the design features envisioned by the architect. However, Mr. Wong knows where to turn to in cases like this as he is a convinced PERI user. Currently, RCS hydraulic self-climbing systems for internal cores and CB Climbing systems for external walls are in use. Since the site is in the middle of existing residential areas, the working hours are restricted. Again PERI formwork is the perfect solution as the use of IBS is more efficient and reduces wastage and noise emissions.

Core walls go all the way up to the top, occupying some 40% of each floor. There are 5 cores, which are, relatively speaking, large and have to fit into the overall twisting design. Again, PERI provides a solution, solving Mr. Wong’s problems. “Cores need to climb ahead of the slabs. Otherwise we are unable to realise the cycle times required to be on time. Also, PERI formwork helps us to reduce the manpower needed on site.” Only 16 carpenters per tower are handling the formwork provided by PERI, making this a very lean operation.

A twisting building is not the first for PERI, but it is for Malaysia’s construction industry. Among others, PERI has provided the formwork to the Absolute World tower, which features a similar twist of 3 – 8 degrees. IJM is, according to Mr. Wong, delighted with the fact that the company is the first in Malaysia to take on this challenge. “This feature seems to be a trend; we are glad to be at the fore front of developments at IJM” he reflects while 300 workers pour over the site in the bright morning light.
